Abstract:
The present study was an empirical investigation to find out relationships among Academic achievement personality variables and intelligence of the college students in Bangladesh. The main objectives of the study were to find out whether (a) students of high achiever group, Middle achiever and low achiever group differ in their intelligence (b) high achiever Middle achiever and low achiever students differ in their 15 personality variables (c) High achiever students Middle achiever and low achiever students differ in their family relationship (d) High achiever students Middle achiever and low achiever students differ in their socio-economic statuses. Nine hypotheses were formulated in the present study: i There would be a significant difference in intelligence of high, middle and low academic achievers.
ii. There would be a significant and positive correlation between intelligence and the academic achievements of students.
iii. There would be a significant difference in some personality variables (Achievement, Order, Autonomy, Interception, Succorance, Dominance, Abasement, Nurturance, Endurance and Aggression) of high, middle and low achievers.
iv. There would be a significant correlation between some of the personality variables and academic achievement of the students.
v. There would be a significant difference in some personality variables of the male and female students.
vi. There would be a significant difference in family relation of the high, middle and low academic achievers.
vii. There would be significant and positive correlation between family relationship and academic achievements of students.
viii. There would be significant difference in belief system about consequences of high, middle and low academic achievers.
ix. The three groups, high, middle and low achievers, would differ significantly in socio-economic status and parents' education. A total of 303 respondents from colleges were selected from 16 districts of four administering divisions (Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi Khulna) of Bangladesh. The instruments used to measure personality variables and intelligence were i} EPPS (Edwards Personal Preference schedule) ii) RSPM (Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices). The respondents' personal belief about consequences, measured by Rotter's External and internal locus control scale. The respondents' family relation measured by BAI (Bell adjustment Inventories) In this research study an adapted Bengali versions of EPPS, BAI, Rotter's I-E scale were used excepting RSPM. Information’s about Socio-economic status of the respondents were collected through questionnaires. The data were analyzed by different statistical techniques such as t’ lest, chi-square test and Co-efficient of correlation.
303 respondents were divided into three groups as High Middle and low achievers according to their obtained marks in S.S. C and H. S. C examinations and obtained score on intelligence test. The high achiever group consisted of 90 students (51 male and 39 female}. The middle achiever group consisted of 118 students (63 male and 55 female). The low achiever group consisted of 95 students (58 male and 37 female).
The results revealed that high achievers Middle achiever and low achievers differed significantly in four measures. Students of high achiever group were more intelligent than that of middle and low achiever students. Socioeconomic status of high achievers were better than that of low achiever students.
Significant difference was found in some personality variables between students of high achievers and low achiever groups.
Family relation of high achiever group was much better than that of low achiever group.
